Halima Cassels is a native Detroit artist and activists who exhibits widely, and has produced a number of  important public works, including the Congressional Seal commemmorating Rosa Parks.  Her work has received recognition, including the James Tatum Art Scholarship, grants from Michigan Council of  Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Brooklyn Arts Council.

After a ten- year stint on the East Coast, Cassells returned home, where she now creates work that is exploratory and genre-bending including interactive installations, and spaces for sustainable exchange between participants.  She is an active member in the Detroit and the North End, assuming leadership roles across many community-based organizations (including the Oakland Avenue Artists Coalition, North End SOUP, The Free Market, and the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network).
